All are due the same month each year. Pay online, by mail, or in person.
If your address is current with NCDMV, you’ll receive a combined notice 60 days before your registration expires.

Why the change?
A 2005 state law combined registration renewals with vehicle property tax collection under NCDMV.
When did it start?
Phased in September 2013; fully active by June 2014.
Will fees change?
Registration fees stay the same. Bills now include property tax.
When is tax due?
At the same time as registration renewal. Taxes must be paid before registration can be renewed.
Leased vehicles?
Taxes must be paid at renewal. Notices are not sent to leasing companies.
Refunds?
Only if sold or registered out of state. Must provide proof of plate surrender and sale/registration.
Military?
Non-resident active duty may be exempt with proof (LES showing ETS date and home of record).
